“Give and Take” was a real ‘stretch’ for me as a writer… The concept of deriving pleasure from pain is somewhat of a foreign idea in my mind.
I am of course familiar with the BDSM community, although not in any direct fashion. And not that I’m saying that “Give and Take” rises to that level, but it certainly deals with the concepts of consensual domination and consensual submission. These are concepts which I basically have little or no first-hand experience with, nor any deep desires to explore. I am aware that they exist, however, as well as aware that there are a significant number of people to whom these concepts hold a tremendous amount of appeal. I have been acquainted with a handful of women who get deliriously turned on by “spanking”, as well as other forms of sexually rough play, or at least more “rough” than I am normally comfortable with. I tried to put myself “in their heads” as I wrote this, trying to convey the excitement they feel for these types of scenarios. I am anxious to hear feedback as to how well I accomplished that attempt.
As ignorant as I was of the concept, it was necessary in order to convey the overlying theme of the story, juxtaposing the soft, tender sides of making love against the rough, animalistic sides of pure, unadulterated fucking, and how each is a totally acceptable form of sexual expression, depending on one’s desire. In other words, to each their own.
I’m well aware that there were many “dangerous” lines that could have been crossed here. Especially considering the built-in “power imbalance” of a father-daughter relationship. I tried to cross as few of those lines as possible. I’m sure some will tell me I crossed way too many of them. Some will probably say I didn’t go far enough. Again, to each their own.
“Consensual” and “mutually enjoyable” were themes I tried to vehemently stick to. While at the same time, I tried to drive home the point that everyone has different aspects that turn them on. Even the title itself tries to convey that underlying theme.
